In Memory of Mary Quackenbush, Associate

East One Associate, Mary Quackenbush, passed away on February 1, 2007. She was 90 years old. Mary had been an Associate for sixteen years. In March of 2003, she was featured with several other Associates and Sisters in Ministry Moments at the Mission Group Meetings.

Mary is survived by four sons, one daughter, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two brothers. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Yoder, Indiana. Her Mass of Christian Burial was on February

Sister Frances Herumin, PHJC passed away on January 10, 2007 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, Indiana. She was born to Roch and Josephine Herumin on February 18, 1914 in Ashland, Wisconsin.

She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community on June 25, 1934. For 50 years Sr. Frances taught school in Indiana and Illinois. She then volunteered at a day care and at St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago before retiring to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1993.

Sister Maricita Petrites, PHJC passed away on November 9, 2006 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Catherine Ann Petrites to Stanley and Anna Petrites on April 30, 1912 in Wilburton, Oklahoma. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1931.

Sister Maricita’s ministry was education for 52 years. She was either a teacher or the principal at many different schools in Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois. After retiring from teaching she cared for the elderly for 8 years before retiring to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1991.

In Memory of Sister Claretta Blattner, PHJC

Sister Claretta Blattner, PHJC passed away on October 9, 2006 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Rose Blattner to Joseph and Theophila Blattner on January 9, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1938.

For 43 years, Sister Claretta taught grades one through eight in schools in Indiana and Illinois. In 1981 her focus changed to the elderly where she continued to minister until she retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1994.

Sister Peter

January 16, 1923 - July 26, 2006

Sister Peter Altgilbers, PHJC passed away on July 26, 2006 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, Indiana. She was born Florence Altgilbers to John and Catherine Altgilbers on January 16, 1923 in Germantown, Illinois. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1943.

Sister Peter taught students for 33 years at various schools in Indiana and Illinois. In 1976 her ministry changed to healthcare where she served as an administrator and in Mission Effectiveness in Belleville, Illinois and Donaldson, Indiana. She retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 2005.
